When I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time on boats, especially in the summer. My Dad and Grandpa loved to fish, so we would go out in the morning, chart a course, and set sail on the wide open sea. After reaching our destination, we would shut off the engine and put the poles in the water. We spent hours out there chatting while waiting for the fish to bite, and as the day wore on, our boat would unintentionally drift. Fortunately, we had radar to keep us oriented, a steering wheel to get us back on track, and a motor whose power could propel us toward the land.

Life is like the ocean: vast, powerful, beautiful, and dangerous.

Much like that boat, our existence is contained in a vessel in which we navigate the seas of time, whether stormy or smooth. In a world whose winds are constantly shifting, it’s easy to be carried by the prevailing currents of society so that we lose our bearings and get off course.

God’s power in us is evident when we keep and set a course. 

In my own life, nothing has empowered me to live rooted in my God-given purpose like the practice of spending time in His presence. As I set aside daily moments to dwell with Jesus and seek His truth and power through reading and prayer, He fortifies my faith and equips me to take on greater feats for His glory.
